Abstract:
Considerable progress has been made in outlining seismic hazards and providing guidelines in seismic rehabilitation of existing structures. Information is needed, however, on how to apply the state-of-the-art structural retrofit methodologies to the existing parking structures. The structural rehabilitation is a three-step process: structural evaluation, selection of rehabilitation criteria, and design of elements and detailing. Of the three, the structural evaluation is a both an art and a science. This article surveys the sources available and describes the retrofit procedure. First, structural evaluation process is described in detail, starting from the first job site visit through the structural analysis and the writing of the final report. Second, the rehabilitation criteria stipulated by UBC-97 and FEMA-273 are outlined. This is followed by a description of several modern rehabilitation techniques that can be used in the parking facilities.
