Abstract:
In a prestressed-concrete bridge, the use of external prestressing permits free distribution of structural materials. In the research of the highest structural efficiency, it is then possible to combine conventional materials in new struss schemes. Even though prestressed-concrete trusses have been used for decades in the field of large span roofs, their use for bridge superstructures is still in an embryonic state. In these last years, the technological advance of external prestressing has allowed to build the first bridges composed of trussed webs and concrete slabs. Their highest efficiency opens new perspectives in precast segmental bridges.
