Abstract:
In an effort to increase awareness of aesthetic considerations of bridges among bridge engineers, a system of evaluating the appearance of bridges by means of a numerical Esthetic Rating Index (ERI) is proposed. It would make possible objective evaluation in an area many engineers believe to be purely subjective, thus establishing definable objectives for aesthetics as with other numerical criteria for strength, deflection, cost, and the like.
