Abstract:
Organizations responsible for the maintenance and repair of public works structures must assess the condition and select the appropriate materials and procedures in order to maintain an acceptable level of performance. Computerized decision-support systems can assist engineers in conducting these activities. One such system developed for use by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) districts is presented in this article. The system, called HYDROCON includes expert guidance and multimedia knowledge formats in a tool for diagnosing distresses in hydraulic structures such as locks and dams. Once the system has identified the distress and determined the cause, engineers are given guidance and access to knowledge on repair materials and procedures. The main objective of this computerized system is to transfer technical knowledge to practicing engineers in the field. Information on HYDROCON’s design, use, and links to COE Internet-based knowledge is described.
