Abstract:
Current codes do not address the issue of applying torque to conventional cast-in place anchor bolts. This construction detail is usually left up to the discretion of the contractor responsible for the work. Most anchor bolts are A-307 material which is not suited for large pretensioning torque. Anchor bolts made of high strength material can be torqued similar to steel friction connections, but the specified torque must be compatible with break-out capacity of the concrete and the ultimate tensile strength of the anchor bolt. This paper discusses some fundamental considerations relating to the application of torque to cast-in-place anchor bolts.
