Abstract:
This article provides a comparison of the stiffening behaviors of pastes, mortars, and concretes using standard tests methods and field-oriented nonstandard measures. Based on the test results, the authors determined that while the ASTM C403/C403M test provides a useful means of tracking the continuous process of stiffening, its threshold values for “initial” and “final” setting do not necessarily coincide with the times at which concrete placing, consolidation, or finishing operations must be performed.
