Abstract:

Indstrialization of building affects each member of the building industry differently - consquently there is little agreement within the industry as to its exact nature. . .Introducing the performance concept increases the scope for innovation, but raises major difficulties of interpretation, demanding new skills within the industry.

Abstract:

The paper identifies and briefly discusses the factors that collectively influence the structural safety of a building. These include the probablilty of occurrence of extreme loading, the factors of design and construction process that determines the building's response, and the function of the building that influences both its design and the consquences of an extensive structural failure. . .Finally, conclusions and recommendation are made with respect to these deficiencies.

Abstract:

The paper reviews the development of the structural precast concrete industry in the U.K. over the last 15-20 years, specifically in terms of the activities of Concrete Limited, and generally as regards other companies, with particular regard to the development of an industrialized system of construction for various markets - apartments, car parks, offices, schools, etc., and flooring generally; it comments on current markets. It discusses the problems which have arisen as a result of Ronan Point and the subsquent activities including Building Regulations and existing Codes of Practice and the recently issued Unified Code based on Limit State Design. It briefly touches on differences between the U.K. and America.
