Abstract:
Compares ACI Building Code design procedure with Comite Europeen du Beton (CEB) procedure and other more elaborate methods of predicting the behavior of tied and spirally reinforced columns. The factors of safety in the material specifications, in the load and capacity reduction factors, and in the design equations for short columns are analyzed separately. The ACI and CEB design equations for slender columns are compared with a theoretical method of analysis.

Reports a study of seven rectangular frames loaded symmetrically so that the columns were bent in single curvature. The object of the investigation was to study and evaluate the strength of the columns as integral parts of frames. For columns in single curvature, frame action permitted 5 to 15 percent more axial load capacity than that predicted without frame action.

SP13 Selected papers dealing with experimental and analytical studies of reinforced and prestressed concrete columns, are contained in this volume. Compilation of the papers has been carried out under the sponsorship of the joint ACI-ASCE Committee 441, Reinforced Concrete Columns, in accordance with the committee’s three main objectives: (I) to review and correlate information on the analysis and design of concrete columns, including the methods required by various building codes; (2) to encourage experimental research on column behavior; (3) to propose design criteria for concrete columns.

A theoretical analysis of the buckling of eccentrically loaded long reinforced concrete columns with abrupt change of the cross section. The solution is based on the plastic theory. An experimental program checked the computed ultimate capacity values of the theoretical analysis.

Two equations are proposed to define approximately the shape of load contours in square and rectangular columns. A method for constructing the interaction diagram for any position of the load is explained. Loads predicted theoretically from such curves are compared with 50 test results. The method is restricted to columns containing eight or more bars evenly distributed among the column faces.
