Abstract:
Minimum thickness provisions are widely used in engineering practice to comply with the serviceability requirements for two-way slabs without calculating the expected deflection under service conditions. However, concern has been raised about the effectiveness that the 45-year-old provisions in ACI 318 have in controlling slab deflections within the permissible values. Using the finite element method and the provisions of ACI 318-14, this paper evaluates from a statistical standpoint the computed deflections of two-way slabs designed to comply with the minimum thickness requirements in ACI 318-14. Based on the results, recommendations are made for future revisions of the Code.
