The American Concrete Institute (ACI) recently participated in the “Towards Enhanced Structures and Sustainable Construction: FRP Solutions for Strengthening, Rehabilitation, and Internal Reinforcement” workshop hosted at the American University of Sharjah, December 9-10, 2025. Day 1 of the workshop, FRP Solution for Strengthening and Rehabilitation, provided valuable insights into the application of externally applied FRP technology for structural repair and strengthening, equipping attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement strengthening and rehabilitation solutions successfully. Day 2, FRP Reinforcement for Sustainable Structural Integrity, highlighted the benefits of using FRP bars as internal reinforcement for concrete structures, emphasizing their contribution to sustainable construction, corrosion resistance, and long-term performance. Attendees gained valuable insights into the latest advancements in FRP reinforcement, guided by the ACI 440.11-2022 code, ensuring compliance with current design standards. The workshop, organized by Dr. Farid Abed, Dana Gas Endowed Chair, brought together academics, designers, contractors, and industry leaders to exchange knowledge on FRP strengthening, rehabilitation, and internal reinforcement, effectively bridging the gap between research, codes, and practical implementation. ACI Past President Dr. Antonio Nanni also delivered a keynote presentation on the "Introduction to FRP Internal Reinforcement: Design, Theories, Considerations, and Design Examples," offering insights into sustainable alternatives to traditional steel reinforcement. The workshop was possible thanks to the collaboration between the American University of Sharjah, Dana Gas, Structural Technologies, MateenBar, Unitech IKK, Arab Basalt Fiber Company, Union Cement Company, ACI, the ACI UAE Chapter, and the International Institute for FRP in Construction.
