As professionals across the construction and safety sectors prepare to mark National Building and Code Staff Appreciation Day on Monday, September 1, 2025, the American Concrete Institute (ACI) has announced its support for the occasion. ACI strives to provide building and code professionals with all the resources necessary to effectively and efficiently perform their duties related to concrete construction.
Observed annually on September 1, Building and Code Staff Appreciation Day gives communities and organizations a chance to express gratitude to those who enforce building safety standards. This includes professionals such as building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, housing, and fire prevention inspectors. Building and Code Staff ensure that buildings remain steady and unaffected, no matter the circumstances.
ACI’s longstanding mission to disseminate consensus-based standards aligns naturally with the spirit of this day. ACI envisions a future where its stakeholders have the knowledge and skills necessary to use concrete effectively in a changing world. To do so, code advocacy is essential to the development process. ACI members' work is incomplete when building code requirements are published or a certification program is launched, and local initiatives are needed for adoption and acceptance.
Become a Proponent or Advocate
Identify the need for a code change proposal. Be a co-proponent or submit a code change proposal to the authority having jurisdiction in your area or the relevant model code, raise the issue of sponsoring code change proposals with your local ACI chapter, and/or contact ACI Code Advocacy Engineers, Steve Szoke, Steve.Szoke@concrete.org for changes to model building codes and Kerry Sutton, Kerry.Sutton@concrete.org for state and local code change proposals.
ACI also offers a platform for collaboration on state, national, and model code initiatives. These collaboration groups provide a forum for interested individuals to work on the development and dissemination of technical criteria and related programs. The current collaboration groups are hosted under the ACI Committee Directory. For interest in state initiatives, contact Kerry Sutton, Kerry.Sutton@concrete.org, and for interest in model code development or international adoptions, contact Steve Szoke, Steve.Szoke@concrete.org.
