The American Concrete Institute (ACI) today announced that Steve Szoke, P.E., ACI distinguished staff and code advocacy engineer, has been appointed to the International Code Council ICC 1500 Standard for Existing Building Safety Inspections committee (IS-EBSI). This 15-member committee is developing ICC’s first standard for existing building safety inspections with the intent to help ensure appropriate measures to maintain the integrity of the structural, fire and life safety, envelope, plumbing, mechanical, electric, and fuel gas components and systems of a building throughout its life due to the paramount importance to maintain the health, safety, and welfare of the occupants and public. Szoke’s appointment reflects his decades of experience and dedication to advancing building safety, structural integrity, and resilient design. In addition to his more than 40 years of expertise in codes and standards development, Szoke plans to assist with coordinating and aligning the new standard's provisions with information generated by ACI technical committees and committees and programs of other standards development organizations, as applicable. “I’m honored to join the IS-EBSI committee and contribute to developing a standard that will help communities make informed, timely decisions about their buildings,” said Szoke. “Working with the ICC committee is aligned with ACI’s strategic goal of using its resources and expertise to provide leadership in the effective use of concrete while continuing to foster awareness of these matters.” Szoke brings an extensive background in building codes, structural engineering, and advocacy to the committee. His advocacy and outreach work at ACI has influenced the adoption and advancement of concrete-related provisions in building codes and standards in the U.S. and internationally. ACI encourages the adoption and/or use of current building codes and standards.
