“As early as 1908, members of the American Concrete Institute (then called the National Association of Cement Users) were debating the relative merits of wood and steel formwork at their annual convention. Today, formwork and forming systems have become an integral part of the entire equipment array on site and of the overall construction planning process. The comparison of metal versus wood and job-built versus manufactured systems continues with many varieties in use and the decision ultimately based on factors of quality, safety, and economy for the individual project.”
This extract is taken from ACI’s Formwork for Concrete 8th Edition Manual, SP-4 (14), and illustrates the importance of formwork in the construction process. ACI works to continually provide the most up-to-date information for industry professionals, and as part of this effort, ACI University has developed a four-part webinar series—Troubleshooting Concrete Forming and Shoring—which will be available June 13-16.
Webinar details:
The Formwork for Concrete 8th Edition Manual, SP-4 (14), is authored by David Johnston of North Carolina State University, and member of ACI Technical Committee 347, Formwork for Concrete. The committee made significant contributions to the new manual, including revisions to bring it up-to-date with Guide to Formwork for Concrete” (ACI 347R-14), which is reprinted in full in the appendix.
ACI's iconic manual, now in full color, includes the current standards and practices, removes outdated or irrelevant material, adds content on new developments in formwork technology and practice, and updates the look and layout of the document. Special student pricing is also available.
