Definition:
A Tilt-Up Supervisor is a person who has demonstrated proficiency in and an understanding of overall on-site administrative and technical management for producing tilt-up projects by passing the ACI written examination and meeting work experience requirements.

A Tilt-Up Technician is a person who has an understanding of overall on-site administrative and technical management for producing tilt-up projects by passing the ACI written examination, but who lacks sufficient work experience to qualify as a tilt-up supervisor.


Scope and Knowledge:
The primary technical resources for this program are as follows:

  • TCA Guideline for Temporary Wind Bracing of Tilt-Up Concrete Panels

The program requires knowledge in the following areas of tilt-up construction:

  • Safety,
  • Plan reading,
  • Scheduling,
  • Site preparation and foundations,
  • Slabs on grade,
  • Layout,
  • Forming,
  • Concrete properties and placement,
  • Erection, and
  • Structural Systems.

Job-task analysis (JTA) for ACI Certification of Tilt-Up Supervisor and Technician


Certification Requirements:
For Tilt-Up Supervisor: ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who obtain a passing grade on the written examination, possess five years (7500 hours) of verifiable construction experience, three years (4500 hours) of which must be experience in tilt-up construction. Of those 4500 hours of tilt-up work experience, 2000 hours must be supervisory experience in the following ten specific areas; the number of hours required in each category is shown beside in parentheses:

  1. Safety (400),
  2. Plan reading (50),
  3. Scheduling (100),
  4. Site preparation and foundations (50),
  5. Slabs on grade (50),
  6. Layout (300),
  7. Forming (400),
  8. Concrete properties and placement (200),
  9. Erection (400), and
  10. Structural Systems (50).

Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of either:
A) The then-current written examination, OR
B) Submission and verification of records reflecting work-experience and continuing-education during the previous five-year period as enumerated below:

NOTE: Individuals who have allowed their certification to lapse by two years or more are not eligible to re-certify by this method. If your certification expired two or more years ago, you will need to retest on the current written examination.

  1. Participation in at least 10 hours of approved continuing education. Courses shall be from listings pre-approved by the ACI C650 Committee and the Tilt-Up Concrete Association from offerings at conventions, exhibitions, or similar venues; PLUS
  2. Tilt-up supervisory experience on three tilt-up projects (or fewer, with a required minimum of 100 panels).

For Tilt-Up Technician

ACI will grant certification to those applicants who pass the written examination but do not possess the necessary work experience to be granted full Tilt-Up Supervisor certification.

Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of either:
A) The then-current written examination, OR
B) Submission and verification of records reflecting a minimum of 10 hours of approved continuing education during the previous five-year period. Courses shall be from listings pre-approved by the ACI C650 Committee and the Tilt-Up Concrete Association from offerings at conventions, exhibitions, or similar venues.
