CSA Standards Field Testing Technician

Definition:
This program replaces the retired ACI CSA-Based Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I program. This expanded program includes and covers all of the CSA-Based Concrete Field Testing Technician—Grade I program materials; certification candidates are now directed to this program for concrete field testing certification using CSA Standards.

A CSA Standards Concrete Field Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field test methods and standard practices on freshly-mixed concrete as prescribed by Canadian Standards Association methods.

Scope and Knowledge:

This program requires demonstration of the knowledge and hands-on skills covered on the Job Task Analysis (JTA):

JTA for ACI Certification of CSA Standards Concrete Field Testing Technician

The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge and skills that may be included in the examinations for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exams.

The program requires a working knowledge of the following CSA standards:

  • A23.2–1C—Sampling Plastic Concrete
  • A23.2–5C—Slump of Concrete
  • A23.2–6C—Density, Yield, and Cementing Materials Factor of Plastic Concrete
  • A23.2–4C—Air Content of Plastic Concrete by the Pressure Method
  • A23.2–3C—Making and Curing Concrete Compression and Flexural Test Specimens
  • A23.2–17C—Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic Cement Concrete
  • A23.2–19C—Slump Flow of Concrete

Certification Requirements:
ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

  1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND
  2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

The sixty-minute (1-hour) written examination is closed-book and consists of 56 multiple-choice questions. There are eight questions on each of the test methods and standard practices.

To pass the written examination, both of the following conditions must be met:

  1. At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and standard practices; AND
  2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is also closed-book and requires actual demonstration of six of the required CSA test methods and standard practices plus a verbal description of Standard Practice A23.2–1C (sampling). The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform or describe all of the required procedures for each test method and standard practice.

Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements.

Recertification requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.
