Abstract:

SP49 Contains a collection of ten state-of-the-art reports written as a guide on the subject of corrosion. Information on procedures to reduce or prevent corrosion can be obtained from this volume. Some of the topics discussed are: mechanisms of corrosion, cathodic protection, corrosion inhibitors, protective coatings, and research still needed. Field experiences for: control of corrosion in offshore structures; shotcrete covercoats for prestressed concrete tanks; effectiveness of concrete cover; selection and use of epoxy and other coatings; and current research results are described.

Abstract:

A corrosion inhibitor is an admixure that is used in concrete to keep the metal embedded in the concrete from corroding. The theory of and types of inhibitors as well as a method for evaluating inhibitors are discussed. Investigations to date are laboratory efforts. Real-life situations revealing results of inhibitors; corrosion resistance; mix proportioning; reinforced concrete

Abstract:

Coatings are sometimes considered for steel that is to be embedded in concrete when the structures will be exposed to moderately or highly corrosive conditions. There are numerous benefits possible by the addition of a protective coating to the steel, as well as several disadvantages. The desirability of use of a coating is open to serious question.

Abstract:

This study was undertaken to ascertain the feasibility of using organic coatings, especially epoxies, to protect steel reinforcing bars embedded in concrete of bridge decks from rapid corrosion. This corrosion is caused by chloride ions from the deicing salts, sodium chloride and calcium chloride. Altogether, 47 different coatings were evaluated to some extent, of which 36 were epoxy coatings.

Abstract:

The author provides a brief history of the original use of shotcrete to provide corrosion protection for spirally wound prestressed shotcrete and concrete tanks. In addition, various failures are described along with reason for the failures. Details are also given of steps that must be taken to insure permanent corrosion protection for the wire.
