Description

This is a recorded webinar from September 12, 2017.

Reinforced concrete structural walls are common in buildings and are normally part of the lateral-load force-resisting system (LRFS). Walls that are part of the LRFS system are known as shear walls. Shear walls resist lateral forces due to gravity, wind or seismic forces, through in-plane shear strength, in-plane bending and out-of-plane strength and axial strength.

ACI 318-14 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete was recently reorganized and simplified such that the design and detailing of non-seismic structural elements (such as walls) are mapped out in a single chapter, rather than searching through numerous chapters in previous code versions. This presentation will take one element – Chapter 11, Walls – and walk through the sections of the chapter to demonstrate step-by-step how to complete the design and detail of nonprestressed reinforced concrete structural or shear walls. Items discussed will include: minimum wall thicknesses; combined axial and in-plane bending capacity; in-plane shear capacity; out-of-plane slender wall analysis; and longitudinal and transverse reinforcement requirements.

This presentation will also show how Chapter 18, Earthquake Resistant Structures (specifically section 18.10, Special Structural Walls), is a resource to design shear walls used to support combined gravity and seismic forces in high seismic category classes D, E, and F. Items discussed include: minimum reinforcement requirements; in-plane shear capacity of tall walls and squat or short walls; combined axial and flexural wall capacity; and design and detailing of special shear wall boundary elements.

Table of Contents

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the simplified design method of designing walls that support combined axial load and in-plane or out-of-plane bending moment, and how the unbraced length and the degree of rigidity of supports affect the ultimate design capacity of the wall.

2. Explain the in-plane shear capacity of walls and the differences between tall walls and short or squat walls.

3. Explain longitudinal and transverse reinforcing detailing of walls and detailing around wall openings.

4. Describe the design of shear walls of buildings in seismic categories D, E, and F using “boundary elements” to support combined axial and in-plane bending.
