Abstract:
The Quebec City Urbanism Division manages many civil engineering structures located in the historical part of the old town. Many of these concrete structures are deteriorated and need to be repaired. Ordinary concrete repair techniques using forms might give satisfactory results, but they are generally expensive and do not always provide a good appearance. Shotcrete is increasingly being used for the aesthetic rehabilitation of civil engineering structures. A technique to improve the appearance of shotcrete repairs was developed. A wall was selected restoration using a novel technique to expose the aggregates on the repaired surface. In addition to the aggregate exposure, the other technological innovations used in this project were: minimal intervention when preparing the surface of the existing concrete (a low depth of demolition); testing of a shrinkage reducing admixture (SRA) in the wet-mix shotcrete to control or reduce shrinkage-induced cracking; and mechanically finishing the vertical shotcrete surfaces.
