Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of bridge management systems, including a historical perspective of current national and local management systems and discussions about the future of bridge-management systems. The research and development work on bridge-management systems that was initiated in the mid 1980s has already resulted in two national bridge-management systems, Pontis and Bridgit, and several local bridge-management systems. Future research and development work on these systems is anticipated to include new and improved techniques, such as the analysis of existing bridge databases, the development of improved deterioration and cost models, the incorporation of natural hazards and extreme events in bridge management systems, and the development of integrated asset-management systems.
