Abstract:
Reinforced concrete corner (RCC) joints subjected to opening moment may be found in liquid storage tanks, bunkers, retaining walls, nibs supporting precast slabs, gable frames, etc. At the corner it is required that the joint efficiency should be greater than 100 percent. Poorly detailed joints subjected to opening moment may have an efficiency as low as 30 percent, but when properly detailed, the joint efficiency may go up to 115 percent. The strut-and-tie model (STM) is a good method for detailing of reinforcement at the joint. It provides insight into the joint behavior and immediately tells why some joint details have low efficiencies.
