This presentation will discuss the condition assessment and non-destructive testing (NDT) of environmental concrete structures through case studies. Assessment, evaluation and repair of environmental structures present some distinct differences with the studies for building type structures. The severe exposure conditions with continuous attack from the elements, the continuous presence of water and attack by chemicals, and the surface erosion are some differences that separate environmental structures from other structures. The methodology and the major tasks of the assessment process, from the preliminary to a detailed assessment, is discussed. Concrete deterioration adversely affects the strength capacity, serviceability, and long-term durability and remaining service life of the concrete structures. The objective of the condition assessment is to determine the type extent and cause of deterioration, as well as the expected remaining service life the structure; thus, the need, type and extent of rehabilitation are established. Proper and durable repairs require proper condition assessment and evaluation. Assessment may include visual, destructive, and non-destructive testing. Also, the material properties and condition should be investigated by laboratory testing of samples taken from the distress structure. The environmental concrete structures should be evaluated in accordance with the ACI 350 “Code Requirements for Environmental Engineering Concrete Structures,” ACI 562 “Code Requirements for Evaluation Repair, and Rehabilitation of Concrete Buildings,” and ACI 364.1R “Guide for Evaluating Concrete Structures Prior to Rehabilitation.” The visual observations should be performed as per ACI 201.1R “Guide for Conducting a Visual Inspection of Concrete in Service.” Non-destructive testing methods and procedures are described in 228.2R “Report on Non-destructive Test Methods for Evaluation of Concrete in Structures.”
