Abstract:
Any building is going to have openings in walls or structural slabs, and openings can interrupt reinforcing bar curtains. Design and detailing requirements at an opening perimeter are provided, including the minimum required reinforcing and reinforcing needed to replace interrupted bars. Problems associated with commonly used details show that designers should be cautious of generic notes for trim bars around openings. Careful assessment of the opening size, location, bar spacing, and development may show that special details are required.
