Abstract:
In 1957, British Columbia (B.C.) Hydro opened a new state-of-the-art office building in Vancouver, Canada. Over the years, staff increased until B.C. Hydro had taken office space in some 10 to 15 buildings in Vancouver. To consolidate and improve efficiency, B.C. Hydro decided in 1989 to build a new corporate headquarters on land that it owns at Edmonds, about 20 min from downtown Vancouver on the Advanced Light Rapid Transit System (ALRT). The total site covers about 11.25 acres and is comprised of two 21-story office towers, four three-story podiums, and a 50-ft (150-m) land bridge spanning the ALRT and Southern Rail tracks, as well as 20th street and a 72,000 ft 2 warehouse. To date, one 21-story tower and three podiums have been built.
