Abstract:
The modern day sophistication of necessary infrastructure projects such as large-scale gravity dams, anchorages of suspension bridges, and mat foundation vessels for nuclear reactors has resulted in complicated concrete structures. In addition, the long-term durability of such concrete structures has become a requirement. Under these circumstances, it is of significant importance to control thermal cracking due to the heat of hydration in mass concrete structures, especially in hot weather concrete. Various construction procedures which can be used for such control in mass concrete structures have been proposed and adopted in some cases. There are several such procedures, including precooling methods, which are probably the most effective among the countermeasures. Precooling methods by using dry ice, research results, and observations of an actual application on a Japanese construction project are described in this paper.
