Abstract:
Discusses the planning and construction of the NCNB Corporate Center Tower, located in the Central Business District of Charlotte, North Carolina. The tallest building in the southeast, it will dominate Charlotte's skyline, and is expected to become the primary meeting place in the city. The NCNB Tower consists of 1.2 million ft 2. It is part of a $300 million complex in the block framed by Trade, Tryon, College, and 5th streets in downtown Charlotte. It uses a heavy stone base and curved sides with progressive setbacks culminating in a crown of silver rods symbolizing Charlotte's nickname "the Queen City." The building's exterior surface is a reddish and beige granite and mirrored glass. Walter P. Moore and Associates is responsible for structural engineering of the entire complex. The intensive four-phase scheme development process has been used successfully in the structural system selection of many other high-rise buildings in addition to the NCNB Tower.
