Abstract:
Describes a research project in progress aimed at developing an optimized precast/prestressed concrete I-girder for use in continuous span bridges. The need for an optimum girder shape is becoming ever greater in the face of changes currently taking place in bridge design philosophy. The continuing desire to achieve longer spans, continuity over the piers, and joint free deck slabs are examples of these changes. The use of high strength concretes combined with innovative production and transportation methods support and encourage the search for an optimum shape.
