Abstract:
Presents proposed code changes that are presently under consideration by ACI Committee 318. The key concept is the definition of the strength reduction factor í in terms of the maximum steel tensile strain at nominal strength. Permissible moment redistribution is also defined in terms of maximum steel strain at nominal strength. The proposed method applies equally to beams and columns, reinforced and/or prestressed. It also applies to composite sections, sections of any shape, and sections with steel distributed throughout the section depth. Nominal strength calculations are not changed, but the í factor applied to nominal strength is affected in the transition region between compression and tension-controlled sections.
