Abstract:
An experimental investigation to study the behavior of short columns and coupling beams reinforced with inclined bars under seismic conditions is presented. A simple technique to prevent the elements from falling in premature splitting shear was tested for the first time. According to this technique, the main reinforcements are arranged at an inclination such as to form a rhombic truss. Twenty-four column specimens were studied. Test results showed that inclined arrangement of main reinforcements is one of the most effective ways to improve the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete low slenderness structural elements with a shear span-to-depth ratio à > 0.75. The testing program also served to help develop and verify an ultimate strength model.
