Abstract:
Proposes a method for determining tension anchorage lengths that involves a single, simple expression for basic development length that is a function of bar diameter, reinforcement yield stress, and concrete strength. The basic development length can be reduced when appropriate using simple factors accounting individually for casting position, bar cover and spacing, transverse reinforcement, and excess reinforcement. Lengths derived from the proposal are compared with those derived from ACI 318-83 and ACI Committee 408 expressions. The proposed method offers the advantages of simplicity and safety. Basic development length, which is safe in any circumstance, is readily calculated, and reductions can be determined easily. Unsafe lengths will not result from inadvertent omission of a modification factor. The possibility of unifying the presentation for all anchorages is apparent.
