Abstract:
Constructed in the 1960s, the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn, UK, is part of a major highway route whose closure results in a 65 km (40 mile) detour, so maintaining the integrity and durability of this structure is crucial. The case study presented in this article describes the phased repair strategy started in 1992 that incorporated advanced repair techniques including conventional concrete repair, cathodic protection, corrosion inhibitors, and reinforced polymer-modified cementitious coatings. The phased remedial measures have been tailored to the client’s funding and have kept this vital piece of infrastructure in use.
