Abstract:
More than 40,000 pieces of ornamental precast concrete are being used to restore historic Shepard Hall at the City College of New York. A “thin shell” reconstruction approach allows replacement of the original failed cladding and terra cotta with conventional masonry and a new ornamental cladding. Use of a high-reactivity metakaolin to improve the strength and durability of the portland concrete mixtures is written into the project specifications.
