Abstract:
Bellefontaine, Ohio, is home to the United States’ first concrete street. In 1891, as an experiment to improve street conditions, the city council hired George Bartholomew to provide the concrete for an 8-ft segment of pavement, which was designed by James C. Wonders. After this experiment proved successful, the square surrounding the courthouse was also paved , creating the first concrete street. The street is still open to light traffic today with a statue of Bartholomew at one end to prevent trucks from damaging the pavement. .
