Abstract:A method of earthquake resistant design is proposed that takes into account the dynamic properties of earthquake ground motion and the dynamic properties of the structure. The method is applied to reinforced concrete cantilever chimneys and by appropriate simplifications the method is made sufficiently simple to be usable in ordinary design practice. The bending moments and shears given by this method differ markedly from those given by the percent g method of design. In particular, they give more economical designs for tall, flexible chimneys.
