Abstract:
This paper provides a new approach to the computer-aided design of distributed (D) regions of concrete structures. An optimization approach is used to define the topology of the equivalent truss structure (location and amount of reinforcement, and position of compressive struts) needed to provide a specified load capacity while requiring an absolute minimum volume of reinforcement. The algorithms (and software) include two new features: 1) a practicality factor b to avoid the generation of impractical reinforcement layout; and 2) a stress redistribution factor a related to the total plastic energy required in developing the capacity of a given truss. Comparisons between alternate optimal solutions and between theory and experiment are provided.
