Abstract:
Unexpected challenges were waiting for the designers of renovations to the Resorts Atlantic City Casino. When an access hatch was encountered, designers discovered that the supports for a new promenade would bear on an elevated slab rather than a slab on ground. To make the situation worse, the beams supporting the slab were severely deteriorated. During construction, it was also discovered that two-story columns created by the removal of an existing floor slab were not reinforced concrete, but rather steel shapes encased in concrete. The timely development of repair and strengthening designs along with extensive coordination between the engineers, contractors, and owners were essential for the timely completion of this challenging project.
