• Determining the pH of Concrete Surface Prior to Installing Floor Covering (364.T42) by Ashok M. Kakade, Concrete Science Inc.

• Repair Options for Epoxy-Coated Rebar Structures by Matt Miltenberger, Vector Corrosion Services, Inc.

• Increasing Shear Capacity within Existing by Reinforced Concrete Structures by John S. Lund, Martin/Martin, Inc.

INSTRUCTIONS: Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (equivalent to 1.0 PDH). Description

The Tech Notes produced by ACI Committee 364 are a compilation of industry best practices that cover important aspects of a concrete rehabilitation program, ranging from the initial stages of evaluation, to designing repairs, to repair preparation, to applying strengthening materials and methods, and to conducting repairs of deficient or deteriorated concrete structures to extend their serviceable safe life. This second part particularly discusses repairing leaking cracks in liquid containment structures; measures to test concrete floor surface pH levels to help prevent floor moisture problems disrupting adhesive flooring coverings, repairs of partial depth surface spalls with epoxy coated bars, and an overview discussion on shear strengthening methods.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify types of chemical grouts and methods of applying grouts to repair concrete liquid containment cracks

2. Describe method to test actual pH levels of floor slabs and how high pH levels on slab surfaces affect adhesives placed under floor coverings.

3. Explain the chemical process that could cause more corrosion on reinforcing bars near chloride free patches that are used to fill and rehabilitate partial depth deteriorated concrete members

4. Explain and summarize different shear strengthen methods on concrete members to improve existing shear capacities.
