The impact of civil engineering on the environment before and after natural disasters were key themes at the ACI Student Forum held during The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Anaheim, CA, USA on October 16, 2017. Approximately 80 students, along with ACI Staff, heard from representatives from seven universities spanning four continents. Kanette Worlds, ACI Student, Faculty, & Young Professional Activities Coordinator moderated the session. Worlds introduced ACI President Khaled Awad, who is scheduled to keynote presentations at ACI Central & Southern Mexico Chapter on October 23 and ACI India Chapter on November 24. Awad spoke with students about why he decided to pursue a career in the concrete industry and encouraged them to dream big. Nazanin Rezaei, student chapter president for Florida International University – ACI touched on the chapter’s involvement with community clean up post-Hurricane Irma. The FIU students were temporarily evacuated from the university when the severe weather warning was issued. Angel Lozano, student chapter president at Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon – ACI, showed photos of damage to two mid-rise buildings following the recent earthquake in Mexico City. He emphasized the value of ACI’s Special Inspector Certification Program as a key to preventing future building collapses during the design and testing phases of construction. Presentations: Escuela Superior Politecnica Del Litoral Sponsored by ACI Ecuador Escuela Superior Politecnica Del Litoral student activities include ACI Certification training, construction site tours, seminars and participation in ACI Student Competitions. Facebook Florida International University Sponsored by ACI South Florida In the Spring 2017, Florida International University won 2nd and 3rd place in the local concrete bowling ball competition. Their student chapter activities include lab and construction site tours, joint-meetings with the local chapter, seminars, and community service related to Hurricane Irma. Facebook University of Sherbrooke Sponsored by ACI Quebec & Eastern Ontario Sherbrooke has 124 graduate and undergraduate members. The university is responsible for introducing the Eco-Concrete Competition to the Fall 2017 ACI Convention. Student Chapter activities include technical visits, educational seminars, and regular participation in ACI Competitions. Facebook Universidad de Cuenca Sponsored by ACI Ecuador Universidad de Cuenca hosted a successful international symposium in September 2017 with more than 600 attendees. The two-day seminar featured expert speakers from a variety of disciplines and countries including Roberto Nunez, civil engineering professor at North Carolina State University. Facebook Indian Institute of Technology Madras Sponsored by Civil Engineering Association, ACI India Indian Institute of Technology Madras is the first team from their university to participate in an ACI Student Competition. The university has a reputation of being one of the best technical institutes in India, with over 8,000 students. The students compete in many local competitions organized by the Civil Engineering Association. Qatar University Sponsored by ACI Qatar ACTS Qatar University students Rabeh Almashhadani and Mohamed Abdelsalam were awarded a free trip to attend the Fall 2017 ACI Convention after winning a local concrete cylinder competition hosted at the university. University of Louisiana Lafayette Sponsored by ACI Louisiana Chapter In addition to preparing a “Cajun-Tuf Concrete” inspired by Cor-Tuf concrete developed by the military, University of Louisiana Lafayette also competes in ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition. The ACI/ASCE joint student chapter worked together for the Clean the Coast community service project that educates students about Louisiana’s coastland while giving back to the community. Facebook Universidad Autonoma De Nuevo Leon Sponsored by ACI Northeast Mexico Chapter Universidad Autonoma De Nuevo Leon’s presentation highlighted the university’s concrete technology course as well as the students’ participation in the ACI Concrete Field Grade I Testing Technician Certification program. The presenters also provided insight on the importance and the need for the Special Inspector training following the recent earthquakes in Mexico. Conrad Paulson, of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., gave an overview of several engineers at varying stages of their careers, presenting their perspectives, how they might differ, and how they collaborate to build a successful work environment.
