Abstract:

Digital computers are used for control of concrete quality during its manufacture and for analysis and interpretation of concrete test results. Statistical parameters normally used for quality control are defined and their use is explained with the help of job control charts. The three case histories presented show: (1) the use of computers in establishing the degree of reliance of the strength of accelerated-cured test cylinders; (2) the multiple correlation analyses of 1176 compressive strength test results and several independent variables; and (3) a computer method for the trial and error fitting of a hyperbolic curve to compressive strength test results.

Abstract:

Thin shell analysis formulated by finite elements is described as a general procedure well suited to computers. Analysis of the individual elements can conveniently be done by numerical integration and examples are described for barrels, domes, and shell walls. Confidence in these analyses are established by studying for all shells the maximum integration length and for domes the required ficticious crown opening. The superposition method of analysis is described for continuous folded plates and finally a brief discussion is given of extensions in the numerical integration of barrels to include the inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete thin shells, particularly above working loads.

Standardized highway bridges have been automatically and economically designed by electronic computer in France since 1962. Computation procedure, programming details, and present capabilities are outlined, and. time and cost data are presented. Examples cited include a continuous T-beam structure and a closed-box culvert.

A brief description of the use of digital computers in an integrated operation by a major steel company for the purpose of estimating, detailing, and shop order entry of reinforcing bars. Explains the various equipment used and shows how the entire network of shops, engineering departments and sales departments is tied together through the use of computers.

Abstract:

A method of obtaining automated optimum cost design and detailing of continuous reinforced concrete girders serving as components of large structures is discussed and illustrated. The method has been successfully tested in automated optimum cost design of practical "one-way" solid slab, beam and girder, high-rise reinforced concrete buildings.
