Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete

Definition: a characteristic of grout, mortar, or concrete made using expansive cement in which volume increases after setting and, if properly elastically restrained, induces compressive stresses that are intended to approximately offset the tendency of drying shrinkage to induce tensile stresses.- ACI Concrete Terminology

Shrinkage-compensating concrete is made with an expansive cement or expansive component system in which initial expansion, if properly restrained, offsets strains caused by drying shrinkage. Shrinkage-compensating concrete is used to minimize cracking and structural movement caused by drying shrinkage in concrete.
