Detailed Webinar Instructions
Description
This webinar is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
Polymer concrete (PC) is a composite material formed by combining well-graded aggregates and fillers with a polymer resin binder, offering a wide range of mechanical, physical, and durability properties. The diversity of available polymer resins enables tailored performance but also presents challenges in systematic material selection for structural applications. This presentation introduces a materials selection framework using Ashby charts to map resin-dependent strength and stiffness relationships in polymer concrete systems. By visualizing performance domains across different resin types, the approach provides a practical and quantitative basis for selecting appropriate materials for specific structural demands. This work supports the development of design-oriented specifications and predictive relationships, enabling engineers to more confidently incorporate polymer concrete into structural applications and facilitating its broader adoption in infrastructure systems.
Table of Contents
Learning objectives:
1. Understand the role of polymer resin type in governing strength and stiffness of polymer concrete.
2. Interpret Ashby charts for material selection in structural applications.
3. Identify key performance trade-offs across different polymer concrete systems.
4. Apply a systematic framework for selecting polymer concrete materials for design and specification development.
