In 2013, ACI Committee 437 published Code Requirements for Load Testing of Existing Concrete Structures (ACI 437.2-13) and Commentary. The Code was developed following the Committee’s review of existing Load Testing Code Requirements as given in Chapter 20 of ACI 318. Committee 437’s review of this standard, and its history, found that existing testing protocol, test load magnitude, and acceptance criteria were all overdue for a revision. Load testing had remained unchanged since 1971 when the building code implemented ultimate strength design. The enduring portions of Chapter 20 result in test loads greater than the intended 85 percent of ultimate, and acceptance criteria that is partially based on an antiquated deflection equation derived from previous ACI 318 codes that may not be applicable to modern structures.
This recorded webinar from September 2, 2014 will highlight both the monotonic and cyclic load testing protocols within the Code and provide attendees with the knowledge required to implement either approach. The methodology, test loads, and acceptance criteria for each protocol will be presented and include an example of the protocol’s use.
At the conclusion of the webinar, the attendees will have developed an understanding of the new Code, load testing application and associated acceptance criteria. In addition, the user will have gained knowledge on the cyclic and monotonic applications as well as the appropriate application of this Code.
