This module is based on two articles from Concrete International magazine. The first, “Practical Design: A Supplement to Academics: Floor Openings in Two-Way Slabs,” is intended to assist design and construction professionals with making openings in two-way slabs. This includes selecting size and location of openings, how openings are created, and when to add strengthening. The second, “Detailing Corner: Reinforcing Bar Layout for Two-Way Slabs,” provides suggestions for good detailing practices.
Table of Contents
1. Describe the differences between flat plates, flat slabs, and two-way beam-supported slabs;
2. Discuss the layout of two-way slabs;
3. Explain the differences between large and small openings; and
4. Recognize the methods available for strengthening, if needed.
