Description

This course covers Chapter 6, Protective Systems, of ACI 546R-14: Guide to Concrete Repair.

The function of protective systems is to extend the service life of reinforced concrete structures or extend the life of repairs on reinforced concrete members subject to reinforcement corrosion and concrete deterioration. This course focuses on protective systems approach to improve the performance of repairs as well as the original concrete by providing protective measures that mitigates ingress of moisture and other contaminants that cause reinforcement corrosion and concrete deterioration.

Most common protective systems are surface treatments (coatings and overlays), penetrating sealers, and joint sealants. Three other types of protective systems discussed in this course are cathodic protection, chloride extraction, and alkalization. These three protective methods help minimize reinforcing bar corrosion in already chloride contaminated reinforced concrete members that have already internal corrosive environments in the reinforced concrete, without removing the concrete member. This course will provide case studies to show how these three protective methods are specifically designed and field constructed to help control or avoid further reinforcing bar corrosion in existing reinforced concrete members.

Table of Contents

Learning objectives:

1. Identify the common types of problems found in reinforced concrete structures that can be relatively successfully mitigated with concrete protective systems.

2. Explain how protective systems can be used on deteriorated, damaged concrete members to substantially reduce corrosion of steel within existing concrete members.

3. Describe the benefits and the precautions of applying protective surface treatments and sealants to prevent reinforcement corrosion and to help mitigate future moisture penetration.

4. Describe the process of cathodic protection and explain the basic principal in electro-chemical corrosion process and to make embedded reinforcement cathodic.
