Abstract:
Seven million dry tons of sludge from wastewater treatment must be disposed of in the United States each year. The most common methods currently being used to accomplish this are ocean disposal, landfilling, and inceneration. The San Diego Region Water Recalmation Agency, however, has devised an innovative wastewater treatment plant that instead uses sludge to produce a lightweight building aggregate. The aggregate can be used in lightweight concrete blocks and structural concrete.
