Abstract:
The selection of appropriate measures for a dry basement depends on a consideration of the external conditions at the site. Basements may be located in well-drained or in saturated soil and meteorological conditions may be conducive to condensation within them. The drainage of surface and subsurface water away from a basement is important where this is possible. Methods of constructing the walls and floors of new basements to prevent seepage and condensation are described. Simple tests for determining the causes of dampness in existing basements are given and remedial treatments against dampness in them are outlined.
