Abstract:
A yield-line design is presented for rectangular balconies fixed along two adjacent edges and subiected to uniformly distributed loads. Full-scale tests of 10 slabs ( with varying span and reinforcement ratios) confirmed the correctness of the predicted collapse mechanisms, the actual collapse loads being higher than the predicted ones due to membrane action. The proposed design method includes deflection control by specifying minimum depth, cutting off of reinforcement as well as an economic assumption of the reinforcement ratios.
