Abstract:
Ductility requirements specifically applicable to reinforced concrete cylindrical shells and folded plate structures are developed. Requirements are established to insure ductile modes of collapse at ultimate loading as a consequence of failure due to end membrane shear and overall flexure. The basis for the ACI 316-77 limitation on shell reinforcement is derived and its limited applicability is indicated. An illustrative example is included.
