Title: Ductility Requirements for Reinforced Concrete
Cylindrical Shells and Folded Plate Structures
Author(s): Morris N. Fialkow
Publication: Journal Proceedings
Appears on pages(s): 82-86
Keywords: cylindrical shells; ductility; failure mechanisms; flexural strength;
folded plates; reinforced concrete; reinforcing steels; shear properties; shells
Abstract:Ductility requirements specifically applicable to reinforced concrete cylindrical shells and folded plate structures are developed. Requirements are established to insure ductile modes of collapse at ultimate loading as a consequence of failure due to end membrane shear and overall flexure. The basis for the ACI 316-77 limitation on shell reinforcement is derived and its limited applicability is indicated. An illustrative example is included.
