Abstract:
Never since the middle of the last century had a stronger earthquake struck the capital of Mexico, never since then did the ground shake for such a long time, never had so many structures collapsed from any cause in the country, never had such high spectral accelerations been recorded for long periods anywhere in the world, and never had such a high intensity been felt in modern times at 400 km (249 miles) from the epicenter.
