Abstract:
The strut-and-tie model approach is a rational and safe design method for reinforced concrete deep beams where flexural beam theory is not applicable due to the nonlinear strain distributions through the depth of the beam. Traditional methods for developing strut-and-tie models in deep beams involve a trial-and-error process depending on the designer’s experience. Practicing structural designers often find this process very challenging and hard to follow. This paper presents a performance-based optimization method for developing strut-and-tie models in reinforced concrete deep beams. Guidelines derived from optimized results obtained from recent research for developing strut-and-tie models in reinforced concrete deep beams are given. A worked design example is provided to demonstrate the development and design of strut-and-tie models in reinforced concrete deep beams.
