Abstract:
Concrete production accounts for approximately 5% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of these emissions derive from the cement binder. Although developments in cement manufacture have led to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, further substantial reductions will require radical change. This paper summarises the findings of a study of options for ‘low carbon concrete’. The study was commissioned in 2007 by UK Government’s Environment Agency, through its Carbon Reduction Fund, with the aim of identifying low CO2 alternatives to concrete for use on flood alleviation schemes.
